Its a Funny Old Game

It’s me, Dan, The Haphazard Athlete, I am a long-suffering Swindon Town fan.

Forty. Eight. Years.

First game
1977/78: Swindon Town 1-1 Chester City

Anyway back to this season, since the Luton game, we’ve been shit. That’s the frustrating bit because at the start of the season, there was actual promise.

You know the feeling:

  • a few decent results
  • things clicking
  • cautious belief creeping in

And then…

Performances dipped.
Results followed.
And suddenly that early-season promise feels like something you half-remember, like a good idea you had in the shower but never quite turned into anything useful.

now it’s more:

  • “is this a social experiment?”
  • “how have we ended up here again?”
  • “who turned the confidence off?”

And yet…

Saturday rolls around.
Home to Chesterfield FC. ( who only need a draw to sucure Playoffs)
And like the absolute mug I am…

I’m back.

Fully invested.
Heart on sleeve.
Probably pacing about like I’m managing from the sidelines despite having the tactical insight of a man who once got lost on a Parkrun.

Because this is what 48 years does to you.

It doesn’t kill the hope…
It just warps it.

And you just know what’s coming, don’t you?…..

More than likley (at least on present form)

But what if the pre-Luton game team turn up?..
What if we score a winner in the dying seconds of the game?

Thens its

Limbs. Absolute limbs.

As a football fan, you live for moments like that ( and it’s worth the bruises and not getting your voice back properly until Monday.
.

I can dream because thats what being a Swindon fan is all about …It’s  turning up every week knowing full well you’ve learned nothing 😅

48 years teaches you not to get carried away, but also not to completely switch off.

And that’s the trap.

Because even now, even after a run that’s been… let’s be kind… underwhelming

There’s still that tiny voice saying:

“Yeah but… what if we actually turn up?”

Which is exactly how they get you every single time
and as much as I sometimes hate it, I would not change for anything

COME ON YOU REDS
